logo for XCOM: Enemy Unknown

A turn-based tactical RPG. It is a "reimagined" remake of the 1994 cult classic strategy game UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense) and a reboot of MicroProse's 1990s X-COM series.

Set in the near future during an alien invasion of Earth, it puts you in control of an elite multinational paramilitary organization called XCOM and tasked with defending the Earth. You command troops in the field in a series of turn-based tactical missions; between missions, you direct the research and development of new technologies from recovered alien technology and captured prisoners, expand XCOM's base of operations, manage XCOM's finances, and monitor and respond to alien activity.

My only sniper out 17 days and the 5th guy out 13 days. Now I have nothing but 4 squaddies and 3 rookies. Damn game sure is harder not reloading the saves.

Loving Enemy Within - it's an amazing upgrade. Proper old timey expansion stuff rather than little DLC

    • Haha, I've only just started to play the expansion. I haven't had the chance to cram alien gunk into anything just yet :P Definitely excited to get a chance to play around with it though.

I must've missed the SW option to improve aim% though o.O I'll have to look into that.

    • Ah I've just tried searching for it - I'm probably thinking of Absolutely Critical: http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/Second_Wave

I could've sworn I saw something though. Clearly I'm going crazy.

If only there was a way to get the improved AI that comes from playing on Classic without the aliens getting the ridiculous crit% and aim% boost that borders on hacking >.>

    • I felt that way at first too, but if you try the aliens multiplayer, you realize how poor their base aim really is. I recommend you learn to deal with it as it will only improve your play, but there are always mods that will do that and more.

[+] And I just completed Xcom Enemy WIthin on Classic.

So, how does it staks with the original campaign.

    In one word: MEH.

I really liked the new Mech suits, because they add a new class onto the battlefield, but for the rest... I think this expansion did more 'bad' than 'good'.

    Among the good things:

    1) New maps and new drop points for older ones: really makes for a huge improvement in variability and gameplay as the new drop points are better placed and the presence of meld encourage exploration.

    2) New council missions, reworked old ones and better pacing of the 2 narrative packs makes for a better flow of the campaign.

    3) Soldiers need more XP, research take a tad longer: makes for a longer and, again, better paced game.

Among the 'bad' or just 'meh'

    1) Gene mods: very, very undelwelming for the most part. The only really useful ones are the leg based modifications and the chest based modifications. And even those, sometimes end up being circumstantial. Also the sleeveless armor design for all kind of armors, including Titans and so on is something I don't like that much.

    2) Mechs. While they are fun to play with I found that they are problematic. Their weaporny is not that great compared to a heavy and it makes it seem a bit unbelievable. Also they are a really important unbalancing factor.

    3) EXALT. While their tactical behaviour in battle is a welcome change from the usual alien fare, I think that they are poor implemented. They appear a bit too late and you will always end up outteching them, even if not doing an optimized run ( I was playing prettly sloppily and they never posed a threat). Even the whole operative metagame in the strategic layer felt more like a nuisance rather than a real threat

    4) Balance. The game already had a pretty fast inverse difficulty curve, but the Mech presence and the leg based gene mods avalaible early cause difficulty to drop even in the first phase of the game, where their characteristic are a big advantage. Also, poor Shivs, useless before, totally useless now.

    5) Some inconsistency between Shen and Vhalen behaviour, regarding human 'advancement'.

So, pretty much all the new stuff ended up in my meh/bad list!

Does this means that the game is worse than the original version? No, but it's not better either. It's differently fun.

Still, the toning down of difficulty made me sad a bit.

I hope now for the 'long war' mod to be made EW compatible...

My stats were on average and in general a few points higher than the mean of other player' stats. Had a really nice time, incredibly refreshing completing a new game after nearly 2 years without doing that. No major complaints.

[+] If Ryan dies i swear to god i will cry.

He is my favorite character so far, i only liked him when i had my first squad. He advanced through the ranks faster than any other soldier. I chose him for PSI training and he was the only one out of 35 soldiers to have the gift. He is the chosen one so therefor he is the only one to have a skull helmet.

He is Wardog and he must not die.
