logo for XCOM: Enemy Unknown

A turn-based tactical RPG. It is a "reimagined" remake of the 1994 cult classic strategy game UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as X-COM: UFO Defense) and a reboot of MicroProse's 1990s X-COM series.

Set in the near future during an alien invasion of Earth, it puts you in control of an elite multinational paramilitary organization called XCOM and tasked with defending the Earth. You command troops in the field in a series of turn-based tactical missions; between missions, you direct the research and development of new technologies from recovered alien technology and captured prisoners, expand XCOM's base of operations, manage XCOM's finances, and monitor and respond to alien activity.

I'm seeing Berserkers and upgraded Floaters now and things are just outmatching my guys on one playthrough. I figured I should start over and just use a guide, but idk. I'm not particularly good at these games but I love them lol.

    • I may have to check both of those out, thanks. I'd like to get Enemy Within as I heard it is good as well. The latest Humble Bundle is very tempting, and had I the money I'd grab it.

    • The Enemy Within is amazing, in the sense thst it gives you more options, re-balancing the game significantly! It can make encounters easier and prolongs the gameplay.

On top of that, I highly recommend "The Long War" mod, after you 'finished' it. It got highest praise by the new Xcom creator.

My favourite squad member keeps dying on the mission I'm on, and I have to keep reloading my save. Dammit Johnny Rico, stop dying!

    • the most annoying thing is, if you are moving one of your squad membes and you accidently click in the wrong place - you cannot undo it. So indtead of your soldier being behind cover, they are standing in the open

    • Or worse, if you're suddenly surrounded by a bunch of very powerful enemies that love spamming explosives, poison, or other things that kill very quickly.

When your whole squad of experienced people die and you are left with rookies because you are one inept as *expletive deleted* commander.

    • The Xcom gods are cruel. At least you get to keep your Skyranger.

    • Just make sure to not skip too many missions, especially those uh, terror missions or whatever they're called. Finishing those reduces panic across the board.

    • Positioning, it's alll about getting in the right position for a clean shot. Or a nice grenade toss.
