VVVVVV is a platformer brought back to the aesthetics of those in the 80s, with a basic colour palette and a limited set of controls. You command Veridian, whose space ship hits an interference and is about to crash. The entire crew is evacuated quickly, but a few crew members remain. Due to a teleporter malfunction they have been be moved to random locations on the ship. It is up to Veridian to restore all teleporters and find back the five missing crew members: Violet, Vitellary, Vermillion, Verdigris and Victoria ... hence the game's title.

The game is entirely built around a gravity-flip mechanism. Next to moving around, the only other main ability Veridian has, is to flip gravity force 180 degrees, enabling him to switch between moving on the ground and upside-down on the ceiling.

    • I had two trinkets that REALLY tried my patience: "Veni Vidi Vici" and "Prize for the Reckless". The others are sort of a blur to me, but those two burnt themselves into my memory. Soooo much screaming. XD

This came finally out on the 3DS here in Europe, so of course I have to re-play it now.

And while I already did The Tower (very early - by accident) and the Gravitron (HRRRRGH), I still have to do the dreaded Veni Vidi Vici trinket.

    • I'd say so. It's very faithful, which is both good and bad. In detail:

      - Usage of two screens is fairly intuitive, with the map taking up the lower screen and the main action happening on the upper screen. However, no touchscreen functionality and no extra features on the lower screen, so menus have to be navigated with the D-Pad, and you don't have any fancy stuff like map annotations. What you got on the PC, you get here.

      - Controls are unsurprising. You go left/right with the D-Pad or the circlepad, and you flip with A/B/X/Y/L/R. The occasional interaction (consoles, teleporter, crew member) is done with X. Circlepad controls work surprisingly well... but only because the original game already had less tight controls than, say, Super Meat Boy: The (in my eyes annoying) feeling of inertia is still there, so you will take an extra step or two when stopping. So yeah, circlepad and D-Pad feel equally infuriating in that regard (=P), but the up-side is that you can use the more comfortable circlepad without feeling that you should be using the D-Pad instead.

      - More global experience is also the same: Didn't experience any lag or slow-downs, which would have killed this game. So hooray there. But you apparently also only get one save slot (like on the PC), so if you're sharing your 3DS and letting others play your games, that kinda sucks.

      - 3D is very subtle, but at the same time well done. The only thing that goes 3D is the background stuff, which moves back a little bit, even when you crank the slider all the way up. It's not a major difference, and you're not missing much if you play 2D, but it IS nice and feels fairly natural since it adds a tiny bit of depth to a pure 2D game.

      - Music and sound effects are EXACTLY the same as on the PC, from what I can tell. Needless to say, this is a Good Thing since the chiptune OST was one of VVVVVV's defining elements (in my opinion).

      - Extra stuff consists of the usual things you know from the PC: Extra modes like Time Trial or Flip Mode, accessibility options and cheats, plus 18 extra levels/campaigns... which is apparently more than on Steam? O_o But no level editor on the 3DS (even though it's 3DS software, so it would support Streetpass and Spotpass for sharing them - a pity).

TL;DR VERSION: It's a very good port of a very good game, and you basically get the same experience as on the PC. Little more, little less.

    • Yes it is. "No virtual obstacles, just the challenges by itself". This is awesomeness.

Ugh, my fingers hurt so much... Good idea to be able to simultaneously use WSAD and the cursors. First time I play a game constantly switching the movement hand.

    • I played it first through the Humble Indie Bundle. Then I got another copy with the next Humble Bundle, and then I bought it for the 3DS. Can't get enough of it.
