Started this for the first time yesterday, im currently playing on hard and im on chapter 15, its been a breeze, and a pleasant one, the story is thorough and the gameplay has been wonderful, but the one thing that really grinds my gears is the checkpoints, I manage to shoot wave after wave of enemies, and when I die im set back to the start of the observatory. Sad face.
With today's announcement of Mafia III, I'm seriously considering picking this up. I already own the first game on PS2, but I just have to ask: What is it that people like most about the sequel?

For the record I like Mafia II, I think it offered up a neat little sandbox in an era that is all too underused, however to say that the game itself was lacklustre is an understatement. It was severely lacking and any interesting ideas and mechanics it had did little to set it apart from other sandboxes, let alone make it itself a decent sandbox. Looking to the future of the series, if (or hopefully when) Mafia III happens there are a lot of things I’d like to see it take on, so that the next instalment simply isn’t a better game, but something that changes the series for the better.
- Gameplay: Between driving, firefights, brawling and really the game overall, Mafia II has a very loose feel to it. While functional more often than I’d like my car shifted more than I wanted, or I’d end up in a dire situation because Vito (mis)handled his gun too slowly or because of the clunky controls. There’s a certain standard that gameplay has to aim for; Mafia II certainly hit it, but it isn’t much to ask that the controls be more responsive and tighter in future.
- Character customization: Mafia II's level of customization was by all means simple and left much to be desired. From a very select number of clothes, the most you had in the way of choice was an even smaller choice of colour for each item. I don’t expect a game like Mafia to give us control on the level of something like Saints Row 2, where you can alter and select each individual item and layer of clothing, but I do think we should be given more options in how we look. Something more akin to Grand Theft Auto V is what I had in mind. If I want different pants, let me wear different pants. I don’t want to wear a hat (because hats are stupid, especially indoors), don’t make me wear a hat.
- The Wanted System: Easily the most interesting and unique idea the series has, the wanted system (for a lack of a better term) is something that has to return in future. However as the series evolves, so too does this. I’m not asking for a drastic overhaul, as it doesn’t need one, but with some tweaks, changes and additions this mechanic can be refined. Have a larger list of crimes and have the police respond accordingly depending on which crime/s we commit, given the severity or number of offenses. I’m not saying to the point where the laws in-game mirrors those of real life, but something that gives the system more depth. For example; you’re driving on the wrong side of the road and the police will try to stop you, the longer you do so the larger fine and more responsive they’ll be; too long or drive too dangerously and they’ll resort to different methods. Depending on the crime make it harder to avoid the law -- not just a simple change of clothes or a new paint job and licence plate.
- Larger world: Now there's an argument to be made that a larger world is not always a better world. I'll take a smaller and more detailed world that feels alive than a larger one that's empty any day. However if done right a larger world opens up more opportunities in a game. It allows us to do more, explore and simply have fun in the world, rather than it being the grounds of going from A to B. A larger world with plenty to do, set in the 30’s to 40’s is a world I’d love to play in.
- Side quests: This one's simple. Tying back to my last point, a sandbox simply needs to have something for players to do between missions. Without, a game feels empty and boring; with, you’ve got hours and hours on your hands.
- Money: Money didn't have much of a purpose in Mafia II. Other than raising enough for the next part of the mission, more often than not you’d have little to no need of it. More often than not I’d have close up to 10,000 or more at a given time with nothing to use it on. Give players a reason to want and need money other than weapons, cars and clothes; going back to a larger world and customisation, they both open up the opportunity for us to spend things on.
- Story: Now I enjoy Mafia II's story, however throughout it never exactly strives to be original, along with problems with pacing and an ending that leaves you feeling disappointed and sour, III has a lot to make up for. While crime drama is pretty played out as genres go, but it doesn't mean you have to adhere to every stereotype, cliché and trope.
