This was pretty much the first and last that I played. It got me to read most of Lovecraft's work, still a work in progress, and sparked this love for his version of horror than sent me down a path of writing lots of inspired stories. The most general reason given is his work does not translate into games, *expletive deleted*. Sure it won't be COD but you can do plenty. An LA Noire styled Cthulhu mystery game? An Indiana Jones styled adventure game where the character stumbles onto an ancient shrine or something. Doesn't even have to be directly based on his works just inspired. Look at this masterpiece of a game, it's incredible and still manages to stay pretty true to the mythos. I can't believe all the stuff they were doing involving his works has gone under, the Mountains of Madness movie, the Beyond the Mountains of Madness game and the Destiny's End game. Really just need to get an editor and I will make my own damn game I can't live on this, Amnesia and Eternal Darkness forever.

Cosmic horror mind screw: making chronic depression and panic attacks look like the common cold.

[+] 30 Day Video Game Challenge

Day 16: A game you'd like to see remade or rebooted.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. The reason is the game had great potential. There was plenty of Lovecraftian goodness in it: the atmosphere, the town of Innsmouth, the monsters, the theme of insanity and madness. Unfortunately the game was extremely buggy, and the gameplay itself was horrendously bad. You couldn't shoot your way out of most situations, and the only thing stealth mode did was slow you down to a snail's pace. Seriously, I've seen real life turtles move faster than you could while stealthed in this game. So I'd like to see it remade into a good version that's actually fun to play.

    • Lowest I'd give it is a 7 honestly, but highest is only an 8 given the sloppy gameplay mechanics and blatant bugs.

But, as a guy who has experienced Arkham horror and the Cthulhu boardgames only a few times, this game invokes the same type of repressed feelings any cosmic horror investigator must feel when going up against a nigh invincible entity.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed the more action oriented sections as it is just as easy to die; In the end, it really doesn't matter if you have only a pistol or some eldritch tech based lighting gun. It portrays a sense of helplessness against a god(s) of mostly alien origins, despite how well you are prepared to tip the odds in your favor.

This might sound like a very controversial decision when it comes to Cthulhu-verse inspired games, but I hope that there are about as much action as in Dark Corners of the earth if future Cthulhu games are made.

The game would have rewritten the history of survival horror completely if the ai wasn't so dumb and retarded. I once believed that survival horror shouldn't emphasize so much on action sequences, but CoC convinced me that action sequences could be something which forces the player into a sense of oppression despite how well prepared they think they are.

I think that it's fair to give players the opportunity for conventional fps tactics, and shoving it heavily unto their face mercilessly later the misguided judgement of their actions. After all.... the Cthulhu franchise is one of the most mind-screwing franchises that ever exists on the face of the earth.

It serves to severely punish people who think that they have the upper hand against an entity who is beyond godlike. It is the feeling of having one's sense of control forcibly taken, which conveys the essence of what it is like to even try and teabag the elder gods.

I'm in love with the atmosphere of this game. I love the Cthulhu Mythos, and this game was a big surprise. Can't stop playing it now :D

    • Oh yeah, i read that they were planning a sequel but it wasn't finished. A shame indeed. I haven't finished this one yet (mostly because i'm really scared of horror games, although i love them haha) but it's one of my favourite already. I can only hope the will work on a sequel in the future... There are many awesome Lovecraft stories that would be great in a game.

    • I didn't like PS2 CT very much. The SNES game felt fresh, but I found the always-running-from-some-crazy-dude-frenzy thing a real mood breaker in CT3.

There is a PS2 game called Haunting Ground that implements similar ideas but it's really more efficient and beautiful.
