Holy smokes this game is hot! I've played for 10 hours straight yesterday. It's been a while since I've been glued to my tv like this. The environments are freaking huge! I love how you get rewarded for going off the beaten path and questing is lots of fun too. It's also one of the deepest jrpg's I've ever played. The sheer amount of options is staggering, but thankfully never overwhelming due to a great tutorial system.

Can't wait to dive in deeper!

Finally an English translation has been released! If you don't know about this game (it's called For the Frog the Bell Tolls in English btw) it's a Gameboy game in the vein of Link's Awakening, only with more 2d side scrolling sections. I say LA, because the similarities are striking, but honestly it;s more like a Metroid-style game. And guess what, it's written by none other than our good friend Yoshia Sakamoto, who most recently destroyed the entire Metroid franchise with Other M. I guess back in the day he was actually, you know, good. He did co-create Metroid after all, so I'm willing to write-off Other M as a fluke. AS SHOULD ALL OF YOU.

  • Woo, Playfire has become decent again! Why they even did that last redesign I have no idea, this is what it should have been from the start.

  • L.A. Noire

Been playing me some LA Noire and I'm loving it! It's actually a similar experience to Mafia II in some regards, but LA Noiure nails everything so much more than Mafia II ever did. Like Mafia II, it's quite linear. You can drive around town, but there's not a whole lot of incentive to do so in terms of collectibles. But unlike Mafia II, LA is actually so nicely designed that the environments themselves are worth the trouble of just driving/ walking through.

The meat of the game is of course solving murders and for the most part the game shines here. My favorite parts of the game is walking in someones house and finding clues. That stuff gets me going every time. The interrogations are great as well. It takes some getting used to (choosing "doubt"or "lie" is sometimes a somewhat vague distinction in the beginning) but when you do it's great when you catch a perp lying. Conversely, you feel genuinely frustrated when you screw up your line of questioning.

I don't think I need to mention the facial animations; everyone knows it's genius. It does feel weird at first though. You see these great looking faces on these sometimes rigidly animated bodies and it feels...off. You get used to it quickly enough, but it's clear Team Bondi and Rockstar need to match the body to the faces better next time.

That said, the game's progression is fairly linear, meaning you'll always come to the same conclusion in the end. But I feel that's not so much a problem as the game handles it very nicely. If you screw up, the game ironically rewards you with giving you extra stuff to do. On the other hand, if you do perfectly, you'll reach the end of a case a lot quicker, skipping entire parts. This at least gives the game some replay value.

Car chases are brilliant as well. I've heard some criticism aimed towards the handling of the cars. GTA and such have fairly "heavy" car physics, whereas LA Noire has a very arcadey feel to it. Cars turn sharp corners without a hitch and it's all the better for it. These are some of the best car-chases I've experienced in all my years of gaming (admittedly I'm not much a race fan, so other games might have done this better). There's quite a few chases and all of them get me on the edge of my seat. Likewise the on-foot chases. The game does tend to help the player out a lot; pointing the camera towards the perp, sometimes even steering the player in the right direction, but again, I feel this works. You're supposed to let this game sweep you away, not bog you down in menial tasks, like stopping to see where the perp is, turning around, getting stuck against walls and running again. The game as it is has a very nice flow to it.

It's not a difficult game by any means, but I don't feel that the game is dumbed down in any way. This is no GTA or RDR. A lot of things you took for granted in those games simply don't apply or would even make sense in LA Noire. It's its own beast and it is a very fresh breath of air if you ask me.
