New PS3 vs. Old PS3

As many of you likely know, Sony has released a ton of different versions of the PS3.

For information on the various versions, see Wikipedia.

The primary concern though, is that only the 60 gig version of the PS3 plays PS2 games.

Also, apparently the front fans have been removed, the usb slots reduced to 2, and there is no longer a flash card slot.Technically, non 60 gig PS3s play PS2 games through emulation (like 360 with xbox), but Sony has openly stated they are not going to spend time emulating their library. So in effect, the PS3 does not play PS2 games.

I just want to know the opinons of those who own a PS3, any of the versions. For those who have the newer models, do you think everthing works just fine? Does anything bother you about the lack of features present in older versions? And vice-versa for those with older models.

Ummm the 20GB, 60GB both play all PS2 games and the 80GB plays most.

yeah ive always wondered this. My friend has the 80 gb that has backwards capability. Anyways for the people who dont have the old ps3, they get better memory and *expletive deleted* but they arnt getting the full deal. Its unfortunate because the price was to high they had to cut things out to make it more affordable. Its a shame but i will enjoy playing my 60 gb :D ps2 games

I have the original 60 gig (whoop!) and I love it. Personally I don't really see any problem with the new PS3's. They play most of the PS2 games and if you really need more USB slots you can buy one of those extensions, same goes for the card readers. The PS3 was made to play PS3 games, if anything you should be thankful it even plays the older PS games!

And hey, they get it much cheaper than some of us who got it at launch did so don't complain! Tongue out

I have a 40GB PS3 and I don't really mind that I can't play my PS2 games ... I was hardly playing them to begin with since I had my 360 .... All my PS2 games are just kind of collecting dust and I really have no desire to go back and play them ... and if, for some reason, I do i'll just bust out the dusty old PS2 and pop it in lol. I can see, though, how some people would enjoy at least having the option of being able to play their PS2 games in their PS3.

I don't really use the PS2 BC function either, I can barely keep up with the amount of PS3 games!

It's not even just the 1st party titles that I'm interested in, theres a heck of great multi-platform games I've yet to get!

My post wasn't supposed to be taken seriously... It's just the argument the 360 fanboys used, well still using.

Yeah see your point Dimman, but still its now a fact that the ps3 does have alot of games worth mentioning and playing...where is the time to play them all though? :(

Ok back on topic, I got my 60gig ps3 on release day and one of the reasons i bought one was that my third ps2 got knocked over and basically died, so I thought I could just as well wait for the ps3. I have experienced some problems with the BC, nothing that really bugs me, but there are some games that have graphical bugs that doesnt really disturb the gaming. IF it happens its often hud or text windows flashing in some very specific places of the games. I have alot of ps2-games that doesnt work with the BC though, probably because they arent the blockbuster titles so it kinda killed one of my reasons for buying the ps3, but whatever.

There ya go...oh btw, my first post ^-^v

I love my limited edition 80gb model even though it dont have the ps2 chip. I dont care the simulator works just fine plus I have the CELL powering that & thats all I really need. I like the fact that it has all the usb port & the full card reader. It came with motor storm @ the time.

(the new ps3 just have smaller cell chips less power, less overhearting by 20%, less usb ports & some dont even have a cared reader.)

Just bigger hard drives witch I dont care about because all you got to do it put in a TB harddrive and your good to go!!

Im really happy with the one I have!

I have a UK launch 60GB model, and I don't use the backward compatibility. I kept my PS2 for about 2 weeks after I got the PS3, then traded it in and all my games. They were games that I'd played regularly, but after getting my PS3, I found I wasn't going back to them at all. The only time I've used b/c was when Tomb Raider Anniversary was released. Since completing that, I've all but forgotten about it.

I might be a little bit peeved about the lower number of USB ports, since I have a headset, keyboard and PS Eye connected, but then I'd just pick up a cheap USB hub if I needed to. Ssame goes for the missing card readers... it's convenient having them built in, but for the amount of use they get, I'd get a USB card reader.

So I can't honestly say I wouldn't be that bothered if I had to buy one of the newer models.

You see thats why I got my ps3 when I did because I knew they were going to cut down stuff on it, I didnt really care much about the ps2 chip inside for BC on ps2 game because even though it didnt have the chip It had the the emulator & the CELL chip!!

But I waited till it drop down to $499 so I guess I got some what of a deal on it.  It was brand new & it had everything cant argue with that.

Thats why I take care of my PS3 really good hoping it never brakes I think it would really suck if it broke,The new PS3's dont have everything my ps3 have. Im so use to having everything in it & even though I might not use everything in it, It sure feels good knowing my ps3 has everything I need and some...

Remember this system is still growing!!

I have my 80gig with out bc. I'm fine with it really, since I still have my PS2 still sitting around to tag team in when necessary.

I am currently rocking the 60 gig ps3 and am very happy i did since i still love alot of my ps2 games, but now that they are limiting the USB slots even more so. In my opinion any gameing sysem should be required to play the last systems games.

I've got a 60GB and my only gripe is I'm running out of space.  Nothing an extra HDD won't fix, and aside from that playing the PS1/2 games is awesome, and I actually like streaming my PS1 games thru to my PSP.

A girl I work with has the 80gb with PS2 compatibility too.  She never uses it though, I'm trying to talk her into trading for my new 80gb and keeping my Dualshock Laughing

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I've decided on the 80 gig that comes with backwards compatible emulation.
