Right...My mate has recently gone mad and wants to get one of these types of music games but is really confused on what is good and what is not. Since i suck and dislike these kind of games, i cant help him...though i will probably end up playing with him anyway with one of these games since i love the guy to bits and i cant say no to him >.>

So! Without going into the individual Band version of these games (e.g. Beetles Rock Band), the main two games are Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero 5.

 - Which one of these is better and why?

 - Is there much difference between them?

 - Is one easier then the other (since i would be playing and i suck at these games)

 - I read in certain places that you do not require to stick to certain instruments and we can use what ever we want for both of these games, is this correct (we want to avoid using the drums, etc and both of us using the guitars only)?

 - Can we buy the instruments separately? i looked at game.co.uk and see that we can buy this really expensive guitar for 150 quid (or close to that) but didnt see any others...i must be blind or not looking in the right place.

Though i dislike Activision, Guitar Hero 5 looks more appealing to me because of the drop in and out play which i saw in a review, not sure if Rock Band 2 has that. If i get pissed off, i can just quit the game and leave my mate playing lol. Labelled as an easy party feature but it would be good for me to save me breaking something lol.

(Will be getting this on the PS3 btw).

Guess i need to look at the track listing too but ill do that myself.

Any advice will help, help a noob out :P thank you :)

I only played Guitar hero 5 so far, haven't bought rock band 2.
If you want the full bands instruments then you need to buy band hero or Guitar hero world tour, Guitar hero 5 comes only with a Guitar.

well i think that Guitar Hero 5 is better, the gameplay just seems more fun to me than Rock Band 2 does, yes i have owned both.

Rock Band 2 is alot better suported for DLC songs, however on Guitar Hero 5 you can have both of you playing the guitar at the same time, however on rockband you would have play as someone on the guitar and someone on the bass. Also with GH5 all the songs are available to play from the start, while on RB2 you have to go through the story and unlock the songs, which can take a long time.

And yeah, the party play feature is good which Rock Band doesn't have

Thanks for the help.

So if i went with Guitar Hero 5 with one Guitar, i still have a problem of getting my hands on another Guitar. Seems, getting one is rather difficult lol. Looking on Game.co.uk, play.com and Amazon, the choice is extremely limiting and expensive! Best one i could find was this one for £40! Not sure if it even works for Guitar Hero 5 since its says for 3.

I'd go with RB2

reasons: Great DLC, great community, better lay-out for drums

I disliked GH WT and 5, mainly because it wasn't what GH was about, and just goes with the motto: if RB does it, we intend to do it better and fail at it, not saying that it's a bad game, but, it has it shortcommings, like, overcharting, insane difficulty, making it harder to just jump in and play

either way, the choice is up to you

IMOP I think that Rock Band is the better game.  But I was looking for the band feel, not just the guitar.  I also like the look of the game better than Guitar Hero.

For the rest of your questions:

 - Is there much difference between them? Biggest difference is entire band vs guitar.

 - Is one easier then the other (since i would be playing and i suck at these games) - Both have no fail and easy settings so that is really the same on each.

 - I read in certain places that you do not require to stick to certain instruments and we can use what ever we want for both of these games, is this correct (we want to avoid using the drums, etc and both of us using the guitars only)?  If you want to avoid the drums then go for Guitar Hero.  Rock band comes with the drums, mic and guitar.  You can buy additional guitars for both games.

 - Can we buy the instruments separately? i looked at game.co.uk and see that we can buy this really expensive guitar for 150 quid (or close to that) but didnt see any others...i must be blind or not looking in the right place.  Not sure how the stores are in the UK, but here in the States it seems like every store has equipment for both games.

Hope that helps.

Rock Band 2 by far

- Far more songs and a mountain of more DLC

- Far better character customization

- Notes on screen stay true to the music (Guitar Hero adds notes not there to rank up difficulty).

- A way better band experince

- Rock Band has far better vocal detection. AND better drums.

Truely there's only one reason to get Guitar Hero, and that's if you're a loner who doesn't play with anyone and you're looking for a more difficult experince.

Rock Band 2, over 1000 DLC songs, the songs in GH5 are suited for people who lived during WWII.

i don't understand how you have to be a loner to play Guitar Hero, it has band play just like Rock Band, but it also doesn't force you to play a particular instrument.

Rock Band 2, definitely.

For a new player who is concerned about how well they will actually be able to play the game, you'll definitely want RB 2.  The interface is much more user friendly and easier to understand for new players then guitar Hero.  Also, Rock Band is made by Harmonix, the company that made Guitar Hero 1 and 2.   They moved on to Rock Band and Activision picked up the Guitar Hero licence.  In other words .. the people who created this genre are making Rock Band  ... the people who are racing to catch up and mimic the best selling Band game out there ... Guitar Hero.

Its hard to compete with the DLC support Rock Band gets.  Over 1000 songs .. I mean, that's insane.  And they've been launching DLC since the game came out ... WEEKLY!  And soon they will be releasing the mod software so that bands can create their own tracks right onto RockBand!   You're going to see tons of DLC very soon by more bands then GH knows what to do with!

Rock Band .. definitely

If he likes drumming, he should get Rock band.

If he likes the guitar more, get Guitar hero..

Too much casual music. Rock Band 2 is more fun to play overall and will last you much longer. Guitar and drums have a great feel on Rock Band and GH's feel all stiff. I actually prefer playing RB2 with the GHIII guitar.

Didn't mean it like that. I meant that its only real advantage is its guitar difficulty. So unless he plans on solely playing guitar, because its challenging, he's better of with the superior band experience in Rock Band 2. RB2 offers many more Band modes and options. Band just feels poorly tacked on in GH games. Not to mention the art direction is horrid.

PS to OP: I've been a long time Guitar Hero (since original) and Rock Band fan, I've beaten and played them all to death (mostly with friends). Not a fanboy of either, I'm just siding with the better overall game.

Rock Band for sure.  Even if you like certain things on guitar hero more, like that drop in and out play.  rock band could always add that in a future game.  What can't happen is guitar getting more songs than rock band.   So say you get guitar hero with the miniscule selection of songs, well yeah you'll have that drop in and out but the song selection is poor.  Now say you get rock band 2, you'll have a huge amount of songs to choose from, but you won't have the features, BUT new rock bands are always coming out that will most likely eventually have the feature.  That way you won't be stuck with guitar hero when rock band 3 comes out and blows everything away.

Hello again!

Been talking with my mate about which(poopy poo pants -- my friend wrote that >.> ) of these to get. What we really want is either of these games with two guitars. Now we looked around and getting either game with two guitars will cost us the same and reviewing what you guys said, we are really tempted to get Rock Band 2. But!!!!! We would like to know if any of you have played as a Bass player? What is it like? How different is it compared to the guitar?

Though, we are also curious about the Drums. What are they like to play on? Easy? Boring compared to the guitars?

One last question, any idea of when the next Rock Band game will be released?

I know these questions sound silly but we like to know, thanks :)

Bass is just like Guitar but easier and alot of strumming the same note on most songs

but you do know that on GH5 both of you could play Guitar, just saying lol

and the drums are more fun than the guitar in my opinion but can get very confusing with the bass pedal sometimes lol, and they have at least a little bit of crossover with the real thing

I have just had a similar choice. From the reviews I have read and what I have heard from friends: Guitar Hero has better equipment, it's generally better made, especially if you go for Band Hero, Band Box (£105 from Tesco including P&P), as the drum kit has been upgraded and has all the stuff you need to play both games already in it, no need to get extra bits of kit for the drums. But Rock Band has better songs, in the long run (as in DLC).

So the questions you should be asking yourself are: (1) will I pay more to download new songs? AND... (2) Do I want to fork out £100+ for something I might get bored of in a few months?

If the answer is (1)Yes AND (2)No, then you may as well do what I did, buy the equipment with the better reviews and the get Rock Band 2 (just the game) at a later date.

I bought Band Hero, its a bit pink, but there are some good songs on there, especially if you have had a few drinks or have a few female friends (Spotify link: BAND HERO missing about two tracks, one cover included). I also ordered a NEW copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour from ebay (13.00 including P&P) just for the track list that you can transfer over to your PS3 for a very small fee (I think is around the £3 mark). Make sure its not a used copy!

I plan to get Guitar Hero 5 in a month or so, birthday is coming up, and that will be my extra guitar/bass. But I (/you) could easily get a second hand guitar off ebay and Rock Band 2 (game only) with as much DLC as I like at a later date. I will probably get Rock Band 2 at a later date when I am sure I want to fork out for even more DLC as there are songs that I know I can only get on Rock Band because of the ties with MTV.

If however you find yourself saying, no I don't want to pay £100+ or no I won't pay for more content. Then get some second hand guitars off ebay(Rock Band or Guitar Hero), and get just a Guitar Hero game only (just pick a playlist you like) or just Guitar Hero 5 and an extra guitar. That way, if you want to, you can get Rock Band/Band Hero/whatever comes out next with drums and one more guitar (you can play any combination of instruments on Guitar Hero 5/Band Hero so it's acceptable to say that all future games will probably do the same - 4 singers, 4 drummers, 4 guitars, etc.). If you do this, you aren't forking out for equipment you don't want/need and when/if you decided you want to expand your band you can do so by getting a Band Set, knowing that any equipment you get won't be wasted.

This of course means you won't be singing, playing bass or drums... but if it's just two of you, who cares?

I hope that helps.

I play lead guitar, my wife plays bass.   Bass isn't always just strumming the same note.  Yes, there are songs like that .. where the bass is super easy .. but we purposefully pick up some of the DLC that gives her the tougher go round .. and it IS harder.   But I think they did a good balance job.  The other nice thing is that you can take turns playing guitar and base between sets.
